The Pool Building Process:

A Step-by-Step Guide

Building a pool is an exciting and complex project that requires careful planning, coordination, and expertise. To help you understand what goes into constructing a pool, we have outlined the step-by-step process involved in building a pool from start to finish. This guide will provide you with a better understanding of the various stages and help you effectively communicate with your pool builder throughout the project.

Design and Planning

The first step in the pool building process is the design and planning phase. During this stage, you will work closely with your pool designers and builders to discuss your vision, preferences, and budget. You’ll want to assess your property and take measurements in order to create a custom design plan that incorporates your desired features and meets local building codes and regulations.

Obtaining Permits

Before construction can begin, your pool builder will need to obtain the necessary permits from your local building department. This process may involve submitting detailed plans, engineering documents, and other relevant information for review and approval.

Excavation

Once the permits have been obtained, the construction process begins with the excavation of the pool area. Heavy equipment, such as excavators and loaders, will be used to dig out the pool’s shape and depth according to the approved plans.

It’s DIG DAY! Let the fun begin!

Plumbing and Electrical Installation

After the excavation is complete, the pool’s plumbing and electrical systems will be installed. This includes laying out pipes for water circulation, installing skimmers and drains, and setting up the electrical components for lighting, pumps, and other equipment.

This particular pool has an in-floor cleaning system.

Pool Structure Construction

Next, the pool’s structural framework will be built. For concrete pools, this involves installing steel rebar to create a sturdy skeleton, followed by spraying or pouring concrete to form the pool shell.

Be sure to hose down your fresh shotcrete two-three times a day for 5 days. This helps the shotcrete cure.

Pool Surface Preparation and Finishing

With the pool structure in place, the surface will be prepared and finished. This may involve smoothing and leveling the concrete, applying a waterproofing layer, and installing the final finish, such as plaster, tile, or aggregate.

Pool Decking and Coping Installation

The pool decking and coping will be installed around the pool to create a safe and attractive surface for walking and lounging. Decking materials may include concrete, pavers, natural stone, or wood, depending on your preferences and budget.

White marble was used for this particular pool. It’s cool on the feet in the summer, has tons of grip, and is very well priced.

Pool Interior Finishing

For concrete pools, the interior finish will be applied, and the pool will be filled with water once the finish has cured. There are several types of pool finishes you can use.

  • Plaster with quartz / aggregate finish
  • Pebble Tec
  • Tile

There are plenty of amazing pool finishes to choose from.

Landscaping and Final Touches

With the pool construction complete, the surrounding landscape will be restored, and any additional features, such as fencing, outdoor lighting, or poolside furniture, can be added.
